The FORTIFIED Home program is built around documentation, coordination, and verified installation standards. To achieve a FORTIFIED designation, a certified evaluator works alongside homeowners, contractors, and (when required) engineers to ensure everyone understands the installation process and that each step meets program requirements.
Coordination and Compliance Forms
Every FORTIFIED project is unique. That’s why the program relies on compliance forms that clearly document what materials are being used and which installation details apply to your specific home. These forms create a structured record of the project and help confirm that the work aligns with the FORTIFIED standards.
Photo Documentation: The Construction Story
During installation, photos are captured by both the contractor and the evaluator. These photos act as the visual proof of the work being completed—essentially the “construction story” of your upgrade. This documentation is critical because many of the key details that matter most for compliance happen during the build process and may not be visible afterward.
Audit Review by IBHS
Once the work and documentation are complete, your evaluator compiles the required forms and photo evidence into a submission package for IBHS auditors. The audit team reviews the documentation to determine whether all installation requirements have been met. If everything checks out, the home can receive its certified FORTIFIED designation.
Why Homeowners Choose FORTIFIED
The FORTIFIED program is voluntary, but it’s designed to significantly reduce the risk of storm-related damage. For many homeowners—especially in the Outer Banks of North Carolina—FORTIFIED can also help support the availability of safer rental properties and improve protection for families and guests. These upgrades don’t just provide potential financial benefits; they also deliver something just as valuable: peace of mind.
